Markup vs. margin: the difference
Markup and margin are often confused, but they measure different things. Markup compares gross profit to cost. Margin compares gross profit to selling price.
This distinction matters because a 50% markup does not create a 50% margin. If a product costs $100 and sells for $150, the markup is 50%, but the gross margin is only 33.3%.
Formulas
- Gross Profit = Selling Price − Cost
- Gross Margin % = Gross Profit ÷ Selling Price
- Markup % = Gross Profit ÷ Cost
- Price at Target Margin = Cost ÷ (1 − Target Margin)
- Price at Target Markup = Cost × (1 + Target Markup)
Example
A business buys or produces an item for $100 and sells it for $150.
The gross profit is $50. The markup is 50% because the profit is half of the cost. But the gross margin is only 33.3% because the profit is one-third of the selling price.
For operators, confusing markup with margin can quietly weaken pricing, especially when labor, freight, overhead, rework, or payment delays are not fully included in cost.
